What’s brewing in Malaysia’s breaking scene? More importantly, where is it headed and how are we getting there? For a little insight, we asked the people that’s working to push it forward; the new bloods.

1. HOW'S THE SCENE?

It’s definitely improving, especially with the amount of competitions that are taking place. Plus, local pioneers like Khenobu,Juicy and Zero are recognized outside of Malaysia. Hopefully we all remain united.

The scene’s still a little underground, but we’re growing. With better support, we could get better.

The new generation is made up of a lot of B-Boys that’s trying to keep up with our international counterparts, so there’s definitely a lot of growth and positivity.

It’s growing which is great, but our standards aren’t as good as Thailand or Singapore yet. But now there are many of us, and it’ll be a matter of time before we get there.

2. WORD OF ADVICE FOR KIDS THINKING OF B-BOYING.

Jam more. It doesn’t matter where you’re doing it or the scale of the jam, just give it your all.

Make it part of your life. Don’t be in it just for the win. It should first be about personal satisfaction.

Have a good idol to look up to, but improvise, don’t copy.
To improve, you need knowledge. So learn the roots, start with understanding Hip Hop and its culture.

3. WHAT COULD HELP IMPROVE THE SCENE?

Unity. Let’s mix more and be cool with each other. Together, we can take on the world.

WAKAKA
Ask. Always be humble, approach and ask to learn more. Don’t rely on YouTube alone, sometimes just observing is not enough.
We can afford to be more innovative. Don’t wait for someone else to do it before attempting something new.
Having originality. I think we could go far by having our own culture, flavour and recipe in our moves.

More competitions organised by fellow B-Boys. It’s different when it’s from us, for us. It’s important to support our local efforts.

More shared jamming sessions between the older and newer generation.

4. BIGGEST DIFF BETWEEN THE SCENE HERE AND THE WORLD?

Discipline. In other countries, they train for 8/9 hours daily. Over here, we do it 2-3 hours a day, with texting on the phone in between.
Different level. The world is 5-6 years ahead of us. Yes we might have very good breakers; but without support, we can’t breakout to the global arena.

5. WHAT'S THE BIGGEST JOY OF BEING A B-BOY?

Connecting with the world’s B-Boy community; watching , learning, befriending.

For me, achieving wins and being recognized.
It’s fun! Plus it helps build character and new connections with people.
